Of the 51,198,828 Italian voters called to the polls over the weekend for the European Parliament elections, 3,071,352 will be adults voting for the first time. In the overall electoral body, women (26,300,039, equal to 51.4% of the total) prevail over men (24,898,789, equal to 48.6%). Morterone (Lecco) is the municipality with the lowest number of voters (29). Among the candidates, there are twice as many people over 64 as young people. These are some of the numbers and curiosities contained in the election dossier posted on the Viminale website.

There are 46,111,698 voters who vote in Italy, to which must be added the 4,980,997 registered in the Italian registry residing abroad (Aire); then there are 82,342 so-called ‘optants’, voters from another EU state residing in Italy who vote on national territory for the members of the European Parliament due to Italy. Almost half are Romanians (40,570); followed by the Germans (11,374) and the French (6,957).

There are five electoral districts. The largest number of voters is found in the first, north-western Italy, which includes Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta, Liguria and Lombardy: there are 13,131,325. The second constituency, north-eastern Italy (Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna), has 9,809,086; the third, central Italy (Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Lazio) 9,805,844; the fourth, southern Italy (Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria) 12,431,296; the fifth, Islands, 6,021,277. In this typology of voters, women (55,892) are twice as many as men (26,450).

There are a total of 61,559 electoral stations in the national territory. One of the novelties of this round is the possibility for students to vote away from home: 23,764 young people took advantage of it, the majority residing in the South (14,657). In particular, the Apulians are the most numerous (4,107), followed by the Sicilians (3,917).

Among the 3,071,352 fresh adults voting for the first time, men (1,579,445, 51.4% of the total) prevail over women (1,491,907, equal to 48.6%).

The European seats to be assigned to Italy are 76; there are 15 admitted lists; there were 867 candidates (434 men and 433 women). The list marks filed are 42, those admitted are 34. Among the candidates, the most represented age group is 46 to 55 years (258); followed by that between 56 and 64 years (178); in a clear minority are young people between 18 and 35 years old (76), doubled by the elderly (over 64 years old) who are 131.
Turnout peaked in the first European elections in 1979, when 85.65% of eligible voters voted. In the following rounds there was a continuous decline (except between 1999 and 2004, when it went from 69.73% to 71.72%), until it reached the minimum in the last consultations, those of 2019, when it voted 54.5% of Italians.
