Physical activity adapted to support chronic and fragile patients

In recent decades in Italy there has been an increase in life expectancy, linked to the improvement of social conditions and progress in early diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Very often, however, reaching an advanced age is accompanied by the presence of chronic-degenerative pathologies and physical pain which significantly affect the normal daily activities of elderly people.

The Complex Structure of Rehabilitation Medicine of the ASL of Biella has announced a Public notice aimed at activating collaborations with private individuals, institutions, associations and other bodies interested in order to promote Adapted Physical Activity (AFA) courses in gyms, swimming pools or other non-healthcare facilities.

The National Prevention Plan (PNP) 2020-2025 and the Regional Prevention Plan (PRP), they recognize the burden of chronic diseases as a priority and identify programs and actions useful to promote the prevention of pathologies.

In particular, PNP and PRP provide three types of interventions including: i Walking groups (GdC), the programs of Structured Physical Exercise (EFS) and theAdapted Physical Activity (AFA).

What do the AFA courses consist of:

Ø interventions of a “non-healthcare” nature (not provided by healthcare personnel nor carried out in

Health facilities);

Ø activities carried out continuously over time;

Ø specific exercises foreseen by specific protocols, including inclusion criteria or

exclusion, aimed at reducing the disturbances of hypomobility syndromes;

Ø activities carried out in groups;

Ø activities provided by competent professional figures.

What it’s about

LAdapted Physical Activity is characterized by adapted physical exercise programs carried out in groups. Intended for people with reduced motor skills or physical disabilities. The group’s activity is conducted by a competent professional under the supervision of healthcare personnel, in order to combat conditions of hypomobility, i.e. situations of poor or absent autonomy of movement, improve the level of physical activity, well-being and quality of life.

AFA is therefore a valid and effective practice capable not only of interrupting the vicious circle of hypomobility, but of creating a virtuous circle that favors the recovery and maintenance of good movement in everyday life through sharing and socializing with other people.

Pathologies for which Adapted Physical Activity is envisaged:

– low back pain;

– parkinson and parkinsonism;

– stroke;

– osteoporosis;

– rheumatic diseases (arthrosis, arthritis, connective tissue diseases, etc.);

– fibromyalgia.
