Iraq, the Islamic Resistance threatens the USA: “40 day limit”. Risk of attacks

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of militias under the umbrella of Iran, would have given the Iraqi prime minister, Mohamed Shià al Sudani, a maximum limit of 40 days to resolve the issue of “expulsion” of US forces from the country, otherwise threatening to resume attacks in the country and in Syria against US targets. An informed political source reported this to the Iraqi news agency “Shafaq”. Starting last October, against the backdrop of the war in the Gaza Strip and in support of the Palestinian people, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq began launching attacks against US targets in both Iraqi and Syrian territory. These attacks then ceased after the killing of three US soldiers at a base in Jordan, following which Washington responded by launching a series of raids in Iraq and Syria. The militias belonging to the Resistance had announced the end of their operations against the US forces, explaining that they did not want to “embarrass the Iraqi government” and thus began a “temporarily passive” defensive phase.

Since the beginning of the year, the United States and Iraq have been engaged in talks on the gradual withdrawal of US troops present in the country as part of the International Coalition against the Islamic State. The dossier was also discussed during the visit to the United States in mid-April of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shià al Sudani, who was received at the White House by US President Joe Biden. The parties discussed in particular the work of the three subcommittees established within a high-level military commission created to evaluate the natural evolution of the Coalition. In this regard, Biden and Al Sudani expressed their support for all working groups tasked with analyzing the IS threat level, the operational results achieved and strengthening the capabilities of the Iraqi security forces. The head of the government in Baghdad and the US president have promised to examine all these factors to determine how and when to definitively end the Coalition’s mission, in order to then move on to permanent bilateral security partnerships, according to the basis of the Iraqi Constitution and the strategic framework agreement between the two countries.
