Ukraine may be set to receive prototypes of the powerful “DragonFire” laser from the UK which has been developing the directed energy weapon for more than seven years and conducted its first successful test launch on an airborne target in January. The British Ministry of Defense says DragonFire is accurate enough to hit a pound coin, which is smaller in size than a euro, from a distance of about a kilometre.

DragonFire, the laser weapon for Ukraine
The weapon will not be launched on the market until 2027. Regardless, pressure has mounted for the UK to speed up the process and supply the laser to Ukraine following the publication of a video showing it in action last month. Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksiy Goncharenko told Newsweek at the time that his country was “ready to test” DragonFire on the battlefield. British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps told reporters Thursday that the U.K. is attempting to “accelerate” the development of DragonFire and potentially deliver it to Kiev before it has been fully tested, citing the impact it could have on warfare by offering all ‘Ukraine is an effective method to destroy Russian drones, the Kyiv Post reported.

Costs
If DragonFire were sent to Ukraine and proved to be an effective weapon on the battlefield, it could dramatically reduce the financial burden on Kiev’s air defenses, as the British government estimates it costs around 10 pounds (about $12) per launch. By comparison, each U.S.-made Patriot interceptor missile, which Ukraine relied heavily on during its war with Russia, costs about $4 million to produce.

How does it work
Laser directed energy weapons (LDEW) use an intense beam of light to cut through the target and can strike at the speed of light. It is a weapon that can attack any visible target within range. It was developed by the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), together with some industrial partners, on behalf of the Ministry of Defence. Dstl chief executive Paul Hollinshead said: “These studies have seen us take a huge step forward in realizing the potential opportunities and understanding the threats posed by directed energy weapons.”
