The premiere of the Game of Thrones prequel it attracted an audience of 7.8 million viewers across streaming platforms and TV channels, according to data released by Warner Bros. Discovery. This result, while notable, represents a decline from the season one premiere, which reached approximately 10 million viewers on its debut night. Years after the finale of Game of Thrones, fans were anxiously awaiting the return to Westeros promised by the first season of House of the Dragon, however the show’s finale left the audience in suspense but not so much as to determine the record figures collected by HBO at the debut of the Game of Thrones prequel show.
Data from Samba TV further highlighted this trend, showing that 1.3 million U.S. households watched the first episode of season two on HBO and Max. This is in stark contrast to the 2.6 million households that watched tune in for the premiere of season one, reporting a decline in viewership. Despite these figures, House of the Dragon remains one of the most followed and discussed series of the moment. Season two delivers intrigue, revenge and lots and lots of blood as the Targaryen civil war heats up, keeping the legacy of the Game of Thrones parent series alive.
