There’s a brand new series on Netflixreleased in streaming on May 9, 2024, which sees none other than among the producers Barack and Michelle Obama. This is the synopsis of a TV production that mixes different ingredients: “is a dark comedy thriller series about an eclectic group of podcasters who decide to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in an idyllic coastal town in Ireland”. The text continues: “But following various leads, they discover a story even bigger and more bizarre than they could have imagined”.
Is titled “Bodkin”, created by Jez Scharf, and composed of a first season of 7 episodes lasting approximately 50 minutes each. The percentage of users of Google who liked this series is equal to 75%, while on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes has an approval rating of 73% and finally the score of IMDb it’s 7 out of 10.
The cast of this one Netflix miniseries includes Will Forte, Siobhan Cullen And Robyn Cara, little-known faces who manage to empathize well with the public. Due to the extravagant and bizarre style of this series, many claim similarities with another crime TV show entitled “Only Murders in the Building”also capable of mixing the comic element in the best possible way.
It is no coincidence that the characteristic that immediately catches the eye when watching this production on Netflix is how well the classic thriller is combined with the more typical characteristics of comedy and dark humour.
The setting, as can be understood from the intriguing trailer also available on YouTubeis Ireland, with its wonderful landscapes which, however, between mists and opaque colours, also leave a lot of space for depth and human emotion.
Initially, the viewer’s impact could be confused by an unclear story and particular characters that make viewing difficult. But, after a first introductory episode, we instead find ourselves enjoying a show that in most cases does not leave us disappointed. The narrative is in crescendo, revealing itself little by little.
There is no shortage of twists and turns and all the mystery that keeps you glued to the screen, thanks also to a good investigation into the psychologies of the main characters. There is a young woman who enters the world of journalism with great passion, then there is an expert investigative journalist, cynical and disenchanted, and finally a podcaster who gambles everything on emotions in order to work. For each of them, an inner journey will take place that will show the true face of themselves, despite the appearances and images that the world wants them to convey.
Finally, “Bodkin” on Netflix also represents a very interesting reflection on the different approaches that can be had to journalism in contemporary society, which is always very divisive.
There plot tells precisely of these three protagonists: an American podcaster and his assistant and a hostile and gruff Irish reporter who writes for The Guardian. Together they will travel across Ireland to reach the fictional village of Bodkin, County Cork.
Their goal is to investigate the disappearance of three people but, following the leads, they will find themselves faced with a story even stranger and bigger than they could have thought.
