Tragedy at dawn on the A16 Naples-Canosa where a motorist died and 14 people were injured in a road accident involving a bus with 38 passengers that ended up in an escarpment and five cars. According to the first reconstruction of the Autostrade company, at 4 in the territory of the Municipality of Vallesaccarda in the section between Canella and Grottaminarda an accident occurred between three cars in which a motorist died. Immediately afterwards the bus, which was traveling towards Naples, hit one of the vehicles still stationary on the road. At that point the bus overturned and ended up in the escarpment on the right. The stretch of motorway was reopened shortly before 7 in a detour lane on the opposite carriageway. The bus was recovered by the firefighters who rescued the bus passengers with the collaboration of the traffic police. The bus of the Flixbus company had left Lecce and was headed for Rome Tiburtina. The 14 passengers who were injured, two of them seriously, were taken to hospitals in Ariano Irpino, Avellino and Benevento.
The bus driver suddenly found himself in front of two stopped cars due to the rear-end collision that had occurred shortly before. He tried to swerve to the left, but collided with the guardrail to avoid the impact. So the bus ended up in the escarpment, which fortunately wasn’t particularly deep in that section. Behind followed by three other cars that collided with the cars still stationary on the road. “I think we were all asleep – said a passenger on the bus – what woke us up was the violent braking and then the bang, when we collided with the cars, before ending up in the escarpment”. The young man from Lecce was headed to Rome, where he would then continue on to Florence. He was injured in the shoulder in the accident, like other passengers with him.
