The dynamics

Margherita Salvucci was with her family on a smaller island in Madeira when the accident occurred. According to an initial reconstruction, it seems that the 28-year-old, together with her younger sister, was in one of the natural pools among the rocks characteristic of the area when the sea began to swell.

The younger sister, frightened, ran away, while Margherita was overwhelmed by a freak wave. The girl immediately called for help, saying she couldn’t get back to shore. An Italian tourist who was in the area dived in to help her and rescued her while waiting for a boat that was supposed to take them back to shore, but the young woman’s conditions immediately appeared very serious.

In the meantime, the family had to wait for the boat to return to dry land, precious minutes that made the young woman’s condition even more critical. Once they arrived in Madeira, an ambulance transported the 28-year-old to hospital in very serious conditions. This morning her death.

The condolences

The entire Colmurano community is in shock. The girl is the daughter of the former mayor, Ornella Formica. The accident occurred around 5pm yesterday and the young woman was transported to hospital: in the last few hours the news has spread around the town and everyone hoped for a miracle, then this morning the tragic epilogue. Mayor Mirko Mari has no words to describe the general emotion: «A tragedy that affects us all, we huddle in the family’s immense pain».
