A tragic accident has shaken Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi in the early hours of the morning. At around 5.30am (local time), a portion of the roof of Terminal-1 collapsed, causing a toll of one dead and eight injured. The cause of the collapse appears to be attributed to the intense rains that hit the Indian metropolis in the last few hours.

The collapsed part of the roof has hit several parked cars, including some taxis, in the loading and unloading area of the terminal. Not only the roof sheet metal, but also the support beams fell, increasing the severity of the accident.

I Delhi firefighters promptly intervened, carrying out search and rescue operations. Their timeliness prevented the death toll from being even more dramatic. However, the incident caused significant disruption: flight departures were temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

Airport authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact causes of the collapse and assess responsibility. Meanwhile, structural checks on the airport’s other terminals have been intensified to prevent future accidents.

This event has highlighted the critical infrastructure issues that can arise during extreme weather events, raising questions about the resilience of airport facilities in the face of adverse weather conditions.
