NEW DELHI – After weeks of drought and water rationing, in the night Delhi was hit by a pre-monsoon storm which caused part of the airport’s roof to collapse, causing at least one victim and injuring six people. All flights departing from Terminal 1 are currently suspended.
The collapse of the external structure on the domestic departures level of Terminal 1, the main one of theIndira Gandhi Internationalal, it happened around 5 in the morning, when the canopy that shelters the lane for taxis and passing cars collapsed under the weight of the water. Even the support pylons have given awaycrashing into some parked cars. The only confirmed victim was on board his taxi. While another driver, whose car was partially crushed by the collapse of one of the pylons, was rescued.
The storm that hit New Delhi during the night was very violent. Some streets of the capital, including those near the new headquarters of the Parliamentare impracticable. Same fate for some underpassesincluding Delhi’s first and only real tunnel, near the new exhibition center inaugurated in 2022 by the Prime Minister Naredra Modi in person.
