The costs of the recent flood in Mesolcina amount to 38 million francs. The damage estimate was presented today by the municipality of Lostallo (GR) during a press conference.
The list of interventions necessary to make the flooded area safe is considerable. It is necessary to rearrange the municipal streams and make the Moesa river safe. The land must be cleared of alluvial material, consisting of boulders, stones, gravel and wood, it was explained.
The numerous floods must be drained, while the purification plant (IDA), bus stops and waste collection areas must also be restored. Furthermore, neighborhood roads, farm roads and numerous paths must be worked on.
Finally, it is necessary to consider, as reported in the damage report issued today by the Mesolcina municipality of just under 900 inhabitants, the damage to buildings and the costs resulting from the temporary evacuation of people from their homes.

The flood completely destroyed five buildings, including three houses. The Graubünden Building Insurance is handling 130 additional cases of damage to buildings. The landslide also damaged a drinking water pipeline that was between 600 and 800 meters long.

The damage recorded includes about 100 hectares of land. 400 meters of the banks of the Moesa River were eroded. Eight kilometers of roads were flooded and 30% of the road network was damaged.
Overall, 290,000 cubic meters of alluvial material and mud need to be removed. The cantonal road is passable again, but is only open to local traffic. Anyone who wants to use it needs permission.

“Although several damages will be compensated by insurance or covered by cantonal and federal contributions,” reads the document presented to the media, “there will certainly be exorbitant residual costs for our small community. These are figures that, in light of the municipal budget, we will never be able to cover alone.”

Therefore the municipality of Lostallo has opened a dedicated account for donations. The account is no. CH47 8080 8006 7767 5148 3.
