the centre-left candidate, Andrea Virgilio, won, albeit by a very narrow margin and with an abstention that in my memory never occurred in Cremona, the run-off match against Portesani.

It seems undeniable to me that part of Virgilio’s success should be ascribed to the promotion and support of Luciano Pizzetti, both as a record holder of preferences and with the construction of the ‘Cremona sei tu’ list, which achieved a good result.

Now, having won the victory, the winner must face two issues: the designation of positions in the future council and a reflection on Pizzetti’s role. Virgilio had declared a few days ago that he was aiming for a “completely new council with a new style”, a project that was certainly acceptable; but that intention will have to deal with the requests of at least part of the outgoing council, whose members, having obtained numerous preferences, probably aspire to be reconfirmed as councillors.

As for Pizzetti, we will have to see whether the former parliamentarian will be content to act as the noble father of the new council or, thanks to his leadership and his undoubted experience, will he intend to inspire the council itself on a series of issues to come, starting with assignments of tasks. I want to say that what the Virgilio council needs, in my opinion, is to guarantee unity of purpose and avoid personalism; otherwise, we risk ending up like in Crema, where Mayor Bergamaschi’s council is falling apart with councilors retiring and councilors abandoning the council.

And this would be a prospect that the city, between unfinished projects to be completed and projects only announced but to be put to the ground, would gladly do without.
