Summer 2024 with a hefty bill for those who intend to refresh themselves in a service area of the peninsula’s motorway network with the average price of a sandwich which can cost up to 7 euros against the 4.20 euros of a normal bar with an increase of around 70% more than the bar near your home.
This is estimated by the latest survey by the independent consumer organisation Altroconsumo in 22 service areas between Milan, NaplesRome and Venice.
The report indicates that things are not better for those who decide to have breakfast with the price for a cappuccino being on average 1.84 euros, while for a brioche it is 1.72 euros, for increases of 12% and 26% more. For a smooth coffee, the average cost is 1.35 euros, 14% more.
Analysts also point out that water, still or sparkling, costs on average over 3 euros per litre, compared to 0.67 euros per liter in the supermarket.
Furthermore, in Altroconsumo’s analysis, carbonated drinks (orange soda and cola) were also taken into consideration and the products, present in various formats from 500 to 330ml, cost approximately 8 euros per litre. Finally, for the purchase of packaged ice cream the average cost is 3 euros, with an average price per kilo of 38.51 euros. As for savory snacks, an average of 3.13 euros is spent on a bag of chips, with an average price per kilo of 23.08 euros.
To buy a chocolate bar of around 100 g, on the motorway you spend an average of 3.70 euros, but prices can vary from 1.20 to well 6.29 euros.
