New ordinance from the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, to allow the delivery of waste to the TMB plant in Lentini, starting today.
After the inspection by Arpa Sicilia in the Coda volpe district, yesterday afternoon a summit on the waste emergency was held in the prefecture in Catania which was attended by the regional councilor for Energy, Roberto Di Mauro, the prefect Maria Carmela Librizzi, the mayor Enrico Trantino, the head of cabinet of the president of the Sicilian Region, Salvatore Sammartano and the judicial administrators of Sicula Trasporti.
A meeting that became necessary because Sicula Trasporti communicated yesterday the impossibility of being able to store the “biostabilized underscreen material (EER 190501)” to avoid particulate infiltration into the ground.
With the new provision, the President of the Region has therefore ordered, with exclusive reference to this type of waste, to empty the biocells within eight days and transfer them to energy recovery plants identified by the company itself. The provisions of the previous ordinance remain unchanged.
The mayor of Carlentini, Giuseppe Stefio, intervened on the matter. “The mayors of 200 municipalities – he declares – we experienced dramatic moments yesterday when we learned of the note from the judicial administration of Sicula Trasporti through which it communicated the objective impossibility of implementing the ordinance, with the specter that in a couple of days we would have our streets full of waste not withdrawn. This would have resulted in damage to the company’s image, with devastating effects from an environmental and health-hygiene point of view. Considering that we are at the beginning of the summer season, the business card we would have offered to tourists would have been terrifying. The aspect that surprised us was reading the content of the judicial administrators’ counterarguments to the ordinance, as if the provision had been written by someone who does not know the places, with clear emphasis that, in any case, the judicial administration was not was involved in the drafting of the provision”.
