After the sensational escape yesterday (22 June) of an inmate from the Sughere prison in Livorno – escaped from the high security department of the prison after having managed to climb the wall of the walkways and then reach the boundary wall on the side of the construction site of the new department and climbed over it and disappeared, as the boundary wall was not manned by the “sentinel” service , the Sappe Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union requests an urgent meeting with the leaders of the Dap and the Ministry of Justice.
Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe, explains: “What has been happening in prisons in recent weeks – between suicides, assaults, fights, escapes – is of unprecedented gravity and is the consequence of the infamous dismantling of prison security policies implemented in the past. The penitentiary system, for adults and minors, is crumbling more and more every day and is in absolute need of urgent interventions. Sappe has been reporting for years that the internal security of prisons has been destroyed by wicked measures such as dynamic supervision and the open regime, having removed the sentries of the penitentiary police surveillance from the prison walls, the lack of prison police officers on staff, the lack of funding for anti-intrusion and anti-climbing services. Yet, politics completely didn’t care.”
“Police operations are already underway to ensure the capture of the fugitive, of Campania origin, who I hope will be caught as soon as possible – he concludes – Let’s start again from this escape to put an end to the long wave of dismantling of penitentiary security policies implemented in the past. Dismantling the internal security of prisons with dynamic supervision, an open regime and the absence of penitentiary police has in fact inevitably favored critical events, which are constant and continuous”.
