36-year-old escapes from Livorno prison in broad daylight, unions attack the government: “Disaster”

Evasion from the prison Of Livorno. On the afternoon of Saturday 22 June, a 36 year old prisoner originally from Campania managed to escape from Tuscan penitentiary.

Inmate escapes from Livorno prison in broad daylight

From the first reconstructions of the story, the escaped man would have been helped by someone outside. He fled after managing to climb over the wall that delimits the prison. The 36-year-old was serving a sentence for robberies and thefts.

The escape would have been advantaged by lack of staff guarding the penitentiary.

“Due to a lack of personnel it seems that neither the promenades nor the surrounding wall were permanently manned”, says Gennarino De Fazio, general secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police.

The police are already on the trail of the fleeing individual and are engaged in a manhunt. We also need to discover the accomplices who lent a hand to the 36-year-old by acting outside prison.

Uilpa: “Meloni should take charge of the matter”

“We no longer know how to say it – De Fazio always declares – what else must happen for the Government to become fully and truly aware of the ongoing penitentiary emergency, certainly unprecedented in at least the last 30 years, and pass a prison decree to make them safe ?”

Again De Fazio: “There are 18 thousand units missing from the Penitentiary Police, 14 thousand more prisoners than there are places available, suicides, murders, fights, assaults, rapes, devastation, escapes and much more. Prisons today cannot even aim to pursue any of the objectives assigned to them by the constitution and the laws.”

“Given also the manifest uncertainty of the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, who announces decrees extemporaneously which are then not discussed by the Council of Ministers, we believe that the prime minister Giorgia Meloni he should take the matter to himself unless he has declassified it in his agenda, an eventuality about which, moreover, we have more than a few suspicions. With each passing day – concludes the trade unionist – the disaster increases. We reiterate, there is no more time.”

Penitentiary Police Union: attack on the Government

Criticism also from the Penitentiary Police Union through the statements released by the secretary Aldo di Giacomo: “Yet another escape, widely announced by us. The prison system is leaking from all sides: between suicides and escapes, attacks on officers, the situation is totally out of control.”

“We expect much worse in the coming weeks, the Government and the Department of Prison Administration are not capable of managing the difficult situation. Without immediate interventions – warns Di Giacomo – the prisons will implode. The minister continues to promise only to fail to meet expectations a minute later. The impression is that of amateurs at risk.”
