A free screening to evaluate the lifestyle and cognitive impairment of people aged 60 or over, a meeting to discuss “old age” and related issues, with the participation of experts in the sector, and the donation of a defibrillator. In this way, at the headquarters of the Ra.Gi – Dementia Centers Calabria Association, in collaboration with the Calabria Region, the Rotary Club of Catanzaro and Esi Sud, the International Day for Awareness of Elder Abuse was celebrated, as a testimony to a joint commitment to promoting health and well-being in the community.

The event opened with institutional greetings from Carlo Maletta, president of the Rotary Club of Catanzaro. Domenico Cavallaro, representative of Esi Sud, partner of the project, expressed his support for the initiative, underlining the importance of guaranteeing quality tools, such as the defibrillator, to safeguard the health of citizens. He praised the commitment of Ra.Gi. Onlus, in particular that of the president Elena Sodano for the dedication shown over the years, often in difficult situations. Cavallaro confirmed that for future similar initiatives, Esi Sud and Rotary will continue to support Ra.Gi. Onlus.

“It was a meeting full of ideas, reflections and comparisons to continue with stubbornness and tenacity towards the most correct way of providing care – declared Elena Sodano – It would not be difficult to apply this concept in healthcare institutions, but everything must start with a change of thought on the part of management”.

Among the speeches of the day, Giovanni Frontera, neurologist collaborator of Ra.Gi. Onlus, gave an enlightening speech on the importance of treating the elderly as integral members of the family, recovering the spirit of the 50s and 60s. He highlighted how, in a hyper-connected and performance-oriented world, the elderly are often considered a burden, rather than a precious resource. Frontera invited us to support the elderly, making them involved and respected in society.

Marisa Macrina, intensive care doctor, shared her personal experience, underlining the difficulties in communicating with the families of elderly people suffering from particular pathologies. You underlined the importance of strategic communication between doctor and family, so that medical protocols are understood and accepted, thus improving patient management.

Amanda Gigliotti, psychologist at Ra.Gi. Onlus, spoke about the delicacy of relationships with the elderly, emphasizing the importance of not only verbal but also tactile communication. You illustrated the activities carried out in the area to help families understand the daily critical issues of the elderly, remembering that the latter, despite having special needs, should not be treated like children.

The day ended with greetings from Elena Grimaldi, incoming president of Rotary for the next financial year, who guaranteed the continuation of support for Ra.Gi. Onlus, with new initiatives already planned.

The meeting was moderated by Fabio Scavo, president of the Image and Communication Commission of the Rotary Club of Catanzaro

This event represents an important step towards strengthening collaboration between institutions and associations for the well-being of the community, demonstrating that together it is possible to make a difference.
