three-storey building engulfed in flames

COSSIGNANO – Moments of fear in the center of Cossignano due to a tanker containing 40 quintals of diesel fuel that caught fire and whose flames reached up to a three-storey building with the risk that it could even explode. The fire broke out just before 1pm and caused thick smoke visible from several kilometers away.

The alarm of passers-by

Citizens who were walking along the nearby streets heard small explosions and then saw black smoke and tongues of fire. They immediately rushed to see what was happening and immediately alerted 115. The firefighters of Ascoli and San Benedetto immediately arrived with nine vehicles and managed to put out the fire thanks to the use of foam liquid.

The damages

The flames damaged the windows of the apartments touched by the flames and the smoke managed to penetrate inside the rooms, but fortunately only one on the second floor where a woman lives. The tenant immediately rushed into the street as soon as she realized what was happening. The police from the local station and an ambulance were also on site to help the lady, who fortunately did not even need to be transported to the emergency room, because she had managed to leave the building without inhaling smoke. The causes of the fire are accidental, according to the first reconstructions of the firefighters. The flames apparently started from the engine of the tanker which was still warm after parking and quickly enveloped the entire vehicle and its highly flammable load. Once the tanker containing diesel had been completely shut down, the firefighters continued to work on cooling it. The liquid that was still inside it was decanted.

Inaccessible building

The building involved in the flames, after an inspection to verify its static nature, was declared inaccessible until safety conditions were restored. A building site building installed nearby was also partially damaged. Technicians from Arpam, Ciip and Enel also intervened at the site of the fire to carry out the necessary checks as naphtha leaked from the tanker and entered the sewer system. The technicians carried out checks to see if the diesel fuel had also entered the water supply. Enel workers are instead restoring the electrical panel of the building involved which was damaged by the flames.
