Benevento, relocation of Torre Scuola classes: the opposition calls for an urgent joint commission

“The undersigned city councilors of Benevento ask for an urgent joint commission on the case of the relocation of the Torre Scuola classes.

As members of the Education and Public Works council commissions, we have registered an urgent request to the respective presidents following the imminent demolition of the Torre school which will impact, starting from the next school year 2024/2025, a substantial part of the school population of Benevento and of Sannio (students, teachers, school staff, as well as their families).
Regardless of the positions that each of us may express regarding this choice of intervention, from the beginning we have urged the simultaneous development and sharing of a class placement solution that would guarantee a peaceful and regular teaching continuity, without further inconvenience, also considering the particular historical period that has affected and continues to affect educational institutions (prolonged closures, school dropouts, educational emergencies, etc.). The solution developed in recent weeks by the administration which provides for the distribution of the classes of Federico Torre on three distinct complexes, namely Pacevecchia, Capodimonte, Via Bartolomeo Camerario, distant from each other, with evident traffic problems (crossing the San Nicola bridge under renovation, absence of parking in the historic center area) is clearly extremely difficult to manage, especially for the teachers who have to manage the time change.

The use of the institute in Via Bartolomeo Camerario appears particularly problematic.
On this point, press releases have been issued by the teachers concerned who express legitimate concern and which require an attempt to reconcile everyone’s needs.
In recent months, a notice was issued by the Ministry of Education and Merit – Mission Unit for the Pnrr for the submission of expressions of interest for the purposes of assigning contributions to local authorities, for the leasing of properties or for the rental of temporary modular structures for school use thanks to which it was possible to use to partially cover what was necessary for the possible rental of private structures that this administration decided not to consider.
There are properties already used as schools that are no longer active and which could be evaluated, also due to their proximity to some of the structures affected by the displacement (e.g. Madre Orsola Mezzini in the Pacevecchia area), just as there are unused rooms in structures affected by the displacement (e.g. Former Capodimonte School Cooking Center).

This is just to give a few examples, but it appears urgent in any case to evaluate possible alternatives to the plan recently issued by the administration which does not appear practicable in the opinion of the teachers themselves.
For this reason we have asked to urgently convene a joint Public Works – Education commission, with the presence of Councilors and Managers in order to evaluate possible alternatives to minimize the inconvenience that the current plan will cause for school staff”.

The municipal councilors Megna, Farese, Miceli, De Longis, Sguera, Piccaluga, De Stasio.
