What will Martin Scorsese’s next film be? Apparently not the film Life of Jesus with Andrew Garfield, given that the legendary author has announced a new unreleased project that will be released in the coming weeks.
As officially confirmed in these hours, in fact, Martin Scorsese will film a documentary on ancient shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea in Sicily which will bring the Oscar-winning director back to Polizzi Generosa, the town where his paternal grandparents were born: the untitled project is based on the research of American archaeologist Lisa Briggs, professor and researcher at the University of Cranfield in England, specializing in archeology terrestrial and underwater, particularly in the use of scientific instruments including DNA analysis on artifacts recovered from ancient shipwreck sites, to reconstruct stories of ships, sailors, cargoes and maritime trade in the ancient world.
“We welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm“, Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, councilor for cultural heritage of Sicily, told ANSA. He added that the island authorities “they are making all relevant archaeological sites and parks available, considering the importance of the project”. Several other sources have confirmed that filming is expected to begin this summerwith the regional department of culture of Sicily in co-production.
At this point Life of Jesus will have to wait, as will The Wager with Leonardo DiCaprio.
