The Filea union intervened on yet another tragedy at work in the province of Agrigento, which this time involved a boy of just 21 years of age, Angelo Giardina di Canicattì, who died after being hit by a forklift on the construction site of a construction company. -Cigil.

“Although we do not know the exact dynamics of the accident – says the general secretary Francesco Cosca – we cannot but denounce the need for greater controls especially with regard to the verification of the training which for the construction sector obliges construction companies to introduce workers new recruits to a training course lasting 2 days (16 hours in total). The obligation exists for those who have no previous experience in the construction sector and failure to comply with this requirement entails heavy penalties for the employer. We in our trade union organization have always and daily shouted that work must serve to live and not to die.

Accident at work in a construction company, 21-year-old worker dies

Deaths at work, especially in construction, have reached worrying records and the hope of Fillea-Cgil is that these tragedies serve as a spur to raise the level of attention by politics towards the problems that grip the entire world of work, to avoid these absurd and humanly unacceptable deaths. In the last decade the issue of safety has become the order of the day of conferences, institutional meetings and demonstrations. And many empty words have been wasted, as the data and the massacre on construction sites that does not stop say. People continue to die in the workplace in a disarming manner. We do not need further studies on prevention or other articles, but rather the application of all the rules that govern health and safety in the workplace. We need training in primary schools, but in the meantime we need urgent collaboration from all social parties to prevent the death lists from getting longer, by intensifying checks with the involvement of CPT technicians and anyone who may be in a position to monitor any violations of prevention and safety regulations. Let’s not make this additional blood in vain, let’s honor it by trying to change pace.

Fillea-Cgil is present every day on construction sites, informing workers also about the current regulations that allow them to work safely, experiencing the dangers first-hand and collecting respectable testimonies, so much so that a few days ago in Agrigento the union wrote to all the mayors of the province asking them to work to issue specific ordinances that prohibit the performance of all those activities exposed to thermal risk, since high temperatures, as is known, can cause illness or reduce the worker’s attention span, increasing the risk of accidents.

For these reasons, in the exercise of their institutional prerogatives, Fillea-Cgil has invited them to issue ordinances that, in relation to weather forecasts, block the activities of the construction sector in the time slot where, in relation to the Civil Protection bulletins, temperatures are expected to exceed the temperatures established by law.

As we gather with emotion around the family, colleagues and friends of the young worker who tragically passed away, we trust in the institutions so that the family will not be abandoned and we hope that the judiciary will shed light on the dynamics of the accident”.
