appeal to the Review and request for a meeting with centre-right representatives

“We are preparing the appeal to the Court of Review, which we will file tomorrow or the day after”.

This was reported today by Stefano Savi, legal defender of the President of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti, before entering the Court in Genoa to file the request for a meeting with “5 or 6” political exponents of the centre-right at the office of investigating judge Paola Faggioni.

The appeal had already been announced after the investigating judge had rejected the request to revoke house arrest the other day, in force since Tuesday 7 May.

“We are taking our steps – explained the lawyer Savi – as the Code allows us. We will go to the Review and, if it is not positive, we will go to the Court of Cassation. There’s no question of resignation. For now, this is the theme.”

From the reasons for the rejection of the first request, however, it clearly emerges that the investigating judge links the need for precautionary measures to the role of president of the Ligurian Region which Toti is not willing to give up.

“We have carefully read – added Savi – the investigating judge’s reasons, but we make our assessments as she made hers. There are other political forces and there is a mandate from the voters to respond to which must be respected. In any case, the judge’s reasons can be contested since the requirement of concreteness and actuality of the danger of repetition of crimes and contamination of evidence is missing”.

On the risk that there could be a “strategy” to lead to Toti’s resignation, Savi is more cryptic: “We have our eyes open and the experience to read the cards and what can be seen in transparency.

Now the investigations, after more than three years, are at a good point.

I read that the magistrates want to hear from some regional officials. We have not had any direct contact in this regard, but I don’t think it takes very long to hear from regional officials.”
