The Republic of Congo aims to become a major player in the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2025. The Marine XII project, developed by Eni, has already delivered its first cargo of LNG and has paved the way for new investments in the Congolese gas sector. During the second annual Invest in African Energy (IAE) conference in Paris, Congo’s Energy Minister, Bruno Jean-Richard Itoua, highlighted the importance of projects like this for the country’s energy transition and how international collaboration is a catalyst for project development and climate resilience.

Economic development and fight against climate change

According to Minister Itoua, collaboration with international partners is essential to develop innovative technologies, cleaner production methods and ensure equitable distribution of the benefits generated by the country’s natural resources. African countries that collaborate with foreign companies can accelerate the energy transition and achieve economic benefits. Despite contributing less to global greenhouse gas emissions, Africa is being hit hard by climate change, even as it is making great progress in fighting energy poverty.

Invitation to foreign investors

The Republic of Congo invites foreign investors to collaborate on oil, gas and infrastructure projects. With over 10 Tcf of proven natural gas resources, the country is developing projects that address energy poverty and promote regional economic growth. Through the adoption of low-carbon technologies and collaboration with international project developers, these projects represent a model for other gas-rich African countries.

Future prospects

The Republic of Congo is reviewing existing regulatory frameworks to attract new investments in the oil and gas sectors. The introduction of a new Gas Code is planned, as is the updating of existing codes for hydrocarbons. Such initiatives aim not only to optimize the use of existing resources, but also to develop local infrastructure and skills that create a solid and sustainable value chain. The country’s goal is to become an example of sustainable and environmentally friendly economic development in the region.

The Republic of Congo is focusing on the production of liquefied natural gas to promote economic development and the energy transition. International collaboration is key to achieving these goals and ensuring equitable distribution of natural resource benefits. Through attracting foreign investment, the country is developing new projects that serve as a model for other African countries. The review of regulations and the updating of regulatory frameworks will help create an investment-friendly environment and promote sustainable economic development in the region.
