Not all over the world there father’s Day it is celebrated on March 19th as in Italy: in Anglo-Saxon countries, in fact, the figure is celebrated on third Sunday of June, which in 2024 falls on June 16th, or today. It is a civil anniversary whose aim is precisely to celebrate the figure of the father and fatherhood in itself as well as their social influence. In much of the world this holiday occurs on the day of Saint Josephfather par excellence in the Gospel: he was, in fact, the putative father of Jesus, the one who raised him despite not actually and biologically being his parent.
To the cult of Saint Joseph the Church has also associated Fathers’ Day since the 16th and 15th centuries: a tradition that has only strengthened over the years, so much so that in 1871 the Catholic Church itself proclaimed Saint Joseph, protector of family fathers. It is different for countries of Anglo-Saxon origin: in America, for example, Father’s Day was celebrated for the first time in June 1910, encouraged by Mrs. Dodd, the one who insisted that this anniversary also reach the USA. She chose June 19, the day on which the birthday of her father, a veteran of the American Civil War, fell: probably from here the holiday continued to be celebrated third Sunday of Junein the United States and beyond.
