In the history of Vercelli football, beyond the distant seven championships (between 1908 and 1922) there have been two other moments, much closer in time, which the fans do not forget: that of the promotion to Serie C in 1970/71, with the famous coin after two unforgettable play-offs with Biellese, and that of promotion, again in Serie C (in C2 to be precise) of the 1993/94 season followed by the conquest of the so-called “Scudettino”. Having won promotion, the team coached by Sergio Caligaris faced the winners of the other groups (Varese, Brescello, San Donà and Giulianova) managing to prevail on 12 June 1994, over Giulianova, in a then “Robbiano” seething with enthusiasm with a goal of Arctic at ’89.

The first team (the one in the play-offs and the coin) recently celebrated, in 2022 due to Covid, the fiftieth anniversary of the feat), the Scudettino team (players, technicians and managers) celebrated the thirty years of the triumph yesterday at the “Piola”, with a nice reunion, organized by Maurizio Bilotta and the journalist Paolo Gallione. Almost everyone was there, Caligaris in the lead: among others, from Umberto Izzo to Andrea Cervato (who scored the promotion on the third last day, in Camaiore), and his midfield colleague Monetta, from captain Massimo Storgato to the para-tutto goalkeeper, Sandro Beccari from Vercelli. Then Montebugnoli and Fabio artigianato, who scored that unforgettable goal right at the end of the return match against Giulianova.

And again, the striker Provenzano (“Provvidenzano”, the fans called him), lethal with free kicks from the limit, who dialogued perfectly, up front, with Weffort (absent yesterday) and with ARCTIC. And then the young Scarimbolo, Blatto, Rinaldi and Zelioli. So the managers at the time (president of the company was Ezio Rossi, and his deputy was the late Francesco Proli): Oreste Cassetta, Maurizio Dragone, with Lele Ferrero, the sporting director Enzo Barbero. Goalkeeping coach Antonio Pigino was also there.

Finding each other again after so many years has on the one hand thrilled and on the other moved everyone. In the final group photo, also several journalists who reported the feat at the time.
