A bronze medal in the Olympic C2 500 race, the title of European champions in the thousand meters and a fourth place in the 200. The Piedmontese Carlo Tacchini and Gabriele Casadei were the absolute protagonists at the European speed canoe championships, which closed yesterday on the basin Hungarian from Szeged. Results that sound like an injection of confidence in view of the Olympics, to which Tacchini from Verbano will return eight years after his debut in Rio de Janeiro: this time not on the C1, but paired with the young man from Canavese (making his debut at the Games), with which he qualified the boat last year for the World Championships in Germany.

In Hungary yesterday the wait was all for the C2 500, won by the Russians Alexey Korovashkov and Ivan Shtyl, in a neutral boat. They had already set the best time in the heats during the week and also repeated themselves in the final, repeating the title obtained the day before in the 200 meters. The C2 500 closed in the photo finish with the first four places within less than four tenths. The Russians beat the Poles Wiktor Glazunow and Arsen Sliwinski. Immediately behind the Azzurri who placed just three hundredths ahead of the Hungarians Balazs Adolf and Jonathan Haidu. «As a route it wasn’t what we had in mind, but it still came out as a beautiful race, as always the 500 final is a thriller, you can get off or on the podium for a trifle. In the 200 meters we were down by 3 hundredths, we made up for it in the race that mattered the most” Tacchini says immediately. «We are approaching these last four weeks of work in view of the Games with more awareness and with the idea that we are on the right path» assures the Verbanese of the Fiamme Oro, who then finished fourth yesterday afternoon also in the 5,000.

In Hungary there were two other Piedmontese, the Cusian Agata Fantini (Navy) who managed to qualify for the final of the K1 1,000, then finished in ninth place. Also competing in the kayak over 5000 meters is Marco Borgotti from Verbano from the Circolo Aniene, eighth. —
