Six inmates of the Rostov-on-Don prison in Russia, accused of belonging to ISIS, took two prison guards hostage this morning for a few hours. The kidnappers, detained for terrorism, were killed by the military during a “special operation”. As the penitentiary services reported in an official statement, “the criminals were eliminated and the employees taken hostage were released and were not injured”.

The revolt

As Tass reported, citing the police, the hostages were an officer and an inspector-supervisor of the Rostov detention center in the south of the country. The six terrorists, who were held in separate cells, were able to communicate and had been planning the operation for several months. The kidnappers, armed with a knife, rubber truncheon and fire axe, took the two guards hostage and then, as the Interfax agency wrote, asked for a car so they could leave the facility freely. “A group of six prisoners who took two employees hostage demanded to provide them with a car and freely leave the pre-trial detention center. In response, they promised to release the hostages,” emergency services said. The head of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service for the Rostov region, and representatives of the police forces and the prosecutor’s office then intervened on site. Traffic was limited in the streets adjacent to the pre-trial detention center. Investigators are currently investigating to understand whether the action was coordinated from outside.
