«Moncaro? We risk repercussions on the price of grapes and wines”

Angela Velenosi, owner of the winery of the same name in the Ascolano area: could the Moncaro case turn into a Moncaro syndrome in the Marche?

“I hope not. This is a complex problem, which concerns a company and which must be addressed in a calm manner taking into account the people and the Marche territory.”

What do you mean?

«We are a region that, on a production and quantitative level, is not yet important. We are working on it but our DOCs – Verdicchio, Pecorino, Offida, Rosso Piceno, Rosso Piceno Superiore, Bianchello or Colli Pesaresi – are not among the most important denominations in Italy.”

Why?

«It is a region that still has to grow and cannot afford to lose hectares and quantities of grapes. Therefore, it is normal for there to be some apprehension when problems of this type occur.”

What idea did you have?

«Our thoughts go first and foremost to the farmers, to the members who supply the grapes. And it is precisely with them that we must start so that they find serenity again. Once calm has been recovered, the entire supply chain will find the right tranquility, certain that the winemaking heritage of the suppliers will not be lost. This is why we need to find the right solution which, in my opinion, depends on respecting the supplier, the farmer, the farmer.”

What if the situation doesn’t improve?

«It could have repercussions on the price of grapes for the next harvest. And since Terre Cortesi Moncaro works with four wineries and works throughout the Marche on at least ten DOC areas, if the company is not calm, the many contributing partners connected to the cellars are not calm and, consequently, there is the risk that they will enter many territories in fibrillation. And it would be a shame if it happened this year, with a harvest that promises to be of excellent quality.”

Forecasts?

«From the allegations it seems that everything is progressing well and we have very positive expectations for 2024 production».
