The complaint from Lndc Animal Protection, Lav and WWF: “Disheartening and worrying”. Piazza Dante: «No intention of inducing the judiciary to follow misleading leads»

«A mistake made in good faith. No intention on the part of the Province to induce the judiciary to follow misleading leads.” The reply from Piazza Dante comes a few hours after the release of the note from Lndc Animal Protection, Lav and WWF which denounced the filing of «an autopsy carried out three months before death» of the F36 bear at the center of the legal battle before the administrative judges. «The Province submitted an autopsy examination dated June 19, 2023 of a bear that died of natural causes which cannot be F36, found dead on 27 September 2023″, explain the lawyers Michele Pezone and Paolo Letrari.

The death of the F36 bear

Animal rights activists do not hide a certain disappointment with the Province’s behavior: “It is disheartening and worrying to see a public administration present documentation that has nothing to do with the case under discussion.” But on the merits, “the honest mistake”as clarified by the offices in Piazza Dante, could call into question the cause of the plantigrade’s death, on which there was a killing order signed by President Maurizio Fugatti. “Since there is still no certainty about the causes of the death of the F36 bear, the suspicion remains – observe the lawyers – that the unjustified emphasis on the alleged dangerousness of this bear specimen may have led to her death at the hands of man”. It is the Province itself that admits, in a note released in the afternoon, that “the administration is not yet in possession of the documentation relating to the necropsy examinations carried out on the animal by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venices”.

The killing order

The specimen ended up in the sights of Piazza Dante after the “attack”, on 30 July 2023, in two hikers in the mountains above Roncone, in the Judiciaries. «An episode classified by Ispra corresponding to a danger level of 15 out of 18 – clarifies the Province – for which the interregional action plan for the conservation of the brown bear provides for removal.” Thus Fugatti had signed the killing order, contested by animal rights activists. In October the TAR declared the associations’ appeals inadmissible and now the battle has moved to the Council of State.

Video

Meanwhile, still on the subject of large carnivores, LAV has announced the denunciation of the boys protagonists of the video, which went viral, shot in the municipality of Vallelaghi. In the video, the boys pointed the light of a torch at the plantigrade, calling it with whistles and then chasing it. «It is no longer tolerable that animals always pay the price”, says Massimo Vitturi, head of Lav Animali Selvatici. The video was released shortly after the note from the Province announcing the killing of the M91 bear that had followed a hiker. The battle of animal rights activists does not stop, but in the meantime the Provincial Wildlife Service is working on the prevention front. The forestry corps held a training course for police station commanders on the presence of wolves and bears.
