Donato Capece (Sappe): “We also appeal to the regional and local political authorities: In prison there are not only prisoners, but there are humble servants of the State who currently feel abandoned by them Institutions”.

Crazy day of violence yesterday inside the Frosinone prison, where, at different times, some inmates lashed out at the prison officers.

“The Agents were engaged in ordinary service operations” explain Franco d’Ascenzi and Piero Pennacchia, union leaders of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union SAPPE, the first and most representative of the Category.

“The first attack occurred around 3 pm, in the VI section pursuant to art 32. An Italian prisoner, already the perpetrator of attacks on staff in other institutions, attacked the section officer by striking him violently in the face so much so that it was necessary to medical care at the hospital’s emergency department.

The prisoner who committed the attack was in a clear state of psycho-physical alteration, most likely due to a mix of alcohol and drugs.”

But the violent day had just begun, explain the trade unionists: “The second attack took place around 5.30 pm, in the central infirmary of the institute. Another inmate, also Italian this time and with psychiatric problems, attacked the officer who was in the infirmary, hitting him with kicks and slaps, because he had intervened to defend the nursing staff against whom the inmate had engaged in a verbal attack. A day of absurd madness, also aggravated by the fact that the Blue Basques work in Frosinone with a serious shortage of staff.”

The indictment of Donato Capece, who is the general secretary of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union, is without appeal: “we need a complete turnaround in the management of regional prisons: we are at the mercy of these troublemakers, convinced that they are in a hotel where they can do what they want and not in a prison! We also appeal to regional and local political authorities: In prison there are not only prisoners, but there are humble servants of the State who currently feel abandoned by them Institutions”.

“The SAPPE expresses its closeness to the attacked colleagues”, underlines Capece, “but we are really at a loss: the inmates remain unpunished for their violent conduct and do what they feel like doing, without fearing any consequences. Countermeasures are urgently needed to prevent violent acts against policemen”, concludes the trade unionist: “the comatose state of penitentiaries does not favor the treatment of other users who respect the rules, much less safety”.
