The news comes in the weeks in which the news that Russia will not renew the gas transit agreement with Ukraine signed in 2019, after flows on the East-West axis towards Europe decreased from 25.3% in 2023. It may seem paradoxical, but Kiev and Moscowat war for over two years, have not failed to keep Russian gas flowing via tube through the territory of Kiev, from which Ukraine gained transit rights and the countries of the Old Continent, such asAustria and Hungarythe precious supplies.

“American LNG exports have increased since the first shipments of the fuel from the continental United States in 2016,” recalls the Financial Times. Growing year after year, in a strategy that has united the administrations of Donald Trump and Joe BidenLNG shipments have taken off from 2022: “After the invasion of Ukraine, the industry seized the opportunity to fill the void left by Europe’s push to abandon Russian imports, with developers stepping up to fill the gap.” Europe has grown in the destination share of Stars and Stripes gas, so much so that “the United States was the largest LNG exporter in the world in 2023”.
The choice has geopolitical significance but is clearly anti-economic: when imported, LNG weighs four to five times more, on average, than piped gas. And also theUkraine it is potentially part of a trend of energy dependence which for the whole of Europe nowadays replaces the exhausted Russian source. An alternative, that of American LNG, which it hardly helps either energy independence of the Old Continent that the objectives of environmental sustainability.
