Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) – The death in a plane crash of Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima (see Fides 11/6/2024) shocked Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera has declared 21 days of national mourning.
“We are shocked and deeply moved to hear the news of the tragic plane crash that claimed the precious lives of Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine other Malawians” write the Bishops of Malawi in their statement in which they express their condolences to the nation and to the families of the victims.
“Until their death, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and Mrs. Patricia Dzimbiri were practicing and fervent members of the Catholic Church. They came from families founded and rooted in Catholic faith, ethics and values” underline the Bishops.
Patricia Shanil Dzimbiri was the wife of former President Elson Bakili Muluzi. She was part of the delegation that left from the capital, Lilongwue, led by Vice President Chilima who was supposed to attend the funeral of former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Raphael Kasambara, who passed away on 7 June, in Mzuzu.
The Episcopal Conference has asked priests across the country to remember the victims of the plane crash in the Eucharistic celebrations on Sunday 16 June. (LM) (Agenzia Fides 12/6/2024)
