As summer vacation approaches, the costs associated with car travel may be a concern for some unpleasant surprises. Traveling on the highway and stopping at service areas for a meal or a drink involves significantly higher costs than normal bars and supermarkets.

Sandwiches: +70% compared to normal bars

Who’s going to eat a sandwich during the trip you must prepare to pay a salty price. Based on an investigation by Altroconsumo conducted in 22 service areas between Milan, Naples, Rome and Venice, the average price of a sandwich on the motorway is around 7 euros, compared to 4.20 euros for a normal bar. As a percentage, it represents an increase of +70% compared to the price of sandwiches at the bar.

Breakfast on the motorway: significant increases

Also there breakfast on the motorway is more expensive. A cappuccino costs on average 1.84 euros (+12% compared to the bar), while a brioche reaches 1.72 euros (+26%).
