Accident in Lavagna for a Milanese family on a trip: the father and two children aged 16 and 12 managed to get out of the car almost immediately, the woman and the youngest under water for several minutes

The lives of a 6-year-old boy and his 45-year-old mother have been hanging by a thread since Saturday afternoon. A carefree day at the beach suddenly turned into tragedy. They had left Milan, father, mother and three children (a 16-year-old girl, a 12-year-old brother and the other 6) to reach the port of Lavagna, in the province of Genoa. A trip on a friend’s dinghy, then when they were returning by car the accident.

During the maneuver in reverse, for reasons still under investigation, the car ended up against a post, then on a bollard, then in the water. The father and the two older children managed to get out of the car almost immediately, but this was not the case for the woman and the youngest.

The 6-year-old boy was transported by helicopter to the Gaslini hospital in Genoa and is still in intensive care in very serious conditions. The mother was admitted to Lavagna hospital. On Sunday the health management specified that “the stabilization of the cardiovascular functions and the control of hypothermia have been achieved”. Is that “the patient is currently under deep sedation to contain post-anoxic brain damage and requires organ supports such as mechanical ventilation.”

The husband, stable and always conscious, was also hospitalized in Lavagna in emergency medicine “with minimal respiratory support”. The other two children, in non-serious conditions, were hospitalized for observation in the pediatric department of the “Gaslini Diffuso”. Psychological support was provided to the father and two sons.

Many witnessed the accident and promptly a diver and at least two mooring men worked to free the woman and child from the car. However, despite the rescue efforts, they remained underwater for several minutes. The investigations are conducted by the Circomare of Santa Margherita Ligure.
