100th anniversary of Matteotti’s death, the memory this morning on the Falcomatà seafront

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Matteotti crime, perpetrated on 10 June 1924 by a fascist squad commanded by Amerigo Dumini, the commemoration of Giacomo Matteotti was organized in front of the plaque dedicated to the socialist deputy, located on the Lungomare Falcomatà in Reggio Calabria, near of the War Memorial.

We proceeded with the reading of some passages taken from the numerous books dedicated to Giacomo Matteotti and the “fascist gang leader” Benito Mussolini and from the speech of the “duce” recorded in the report of the parliamentary proceedings (Chamber of Deputies) of 3 January 1925, during of which the fascist dictator declares “...in the presence of all the Italian people, I assume (I alone!) the responsibility (political! moral! historical!) for everything that has happened. If Fascism was a criminal association (omissis), I bear the responsibility for this, because I created this historical, political and moral climate”.

The Reggio Calabria initiative was contemporary, this year too, with the event planned in Rome by the Giuseppe Saragat-Giacomo Matteotti Cultural Club near the place, on the Lungotevere Matteotti, where the socialist MP, who a few days earlier had denounced with great courage the illegalities and fascist violence, he was kidnapped, beaten to death, and thrown into a forest.
