On Saturday afternoon, around 6:00 p.m., the regional road Florence – Pisa – Livorno, one of the most important communication routes in Tuscany, was the scene of a serious accident involving at least two vehicles in motion.

According to what has emerged, a car travelling towards the sea, at the height of the junction between Lastra a Signa and Firenze Scandicci, suddenly lost one of its tyres.

At this point, the vehicle would have completely overturned, trapping the two passengers on board, a man and a woman, while the wheel would have shot into the opposite lane, hitting the door of another vehicle in transit, fortunately without injuring anyone.

But by lucky chance, at that very moment, a policeman from the Florence Police Headquarters was on board his own car on the same highway heading towards Florence, who was off duty and returning to the Tuscan capital.

The officer, seeing the scene of the accident, did not hesitate to intervene.

He immediately pulled his vehicle over to the right edge of the road, in which he was traveling with his wife and 2-year-old daughter, and without thinking twice, he headed toward the car from which smoke was coming out, rushing to the aid of the victims and making sure that the emergency services had been alerted.

Quickly skipping over the guard-rail he reached the car upside down and noticed the two passengers inside completely immobile and apparently unconscious.

In a few moments the policeman managed, not without difficulty, to open the door of the vehicle, unfasten the seat belt and extract the woman from the passenger compartment, saving her.

The worst consequences of the mishap, from which the driver was also saved, were averted by the providential intervention of Adriano, the “hero” policeman who, once off duty, gave a happy ending to the tragic event.
