The pine forest was set on fire and rescued by sea but…. it’s an exercise

The Civil Protection exercise called “FIREVAC 2024”, organized by the Port Authority of Taranto in collaboration with the Civil Protection of the Puglia Region, was successfully carried out.

The event was held along the coast of Castellaneta Marina (TA), and saw the active participation of numerous structures of the Civil Protection System, including the Coast Guard, the Regional Civil Protection, the Fire Brigade, the Carabinieri department Biodiversity of Martina Franca (TA), the Guardia di Finanza, the ARIF, the ASL – 118, the Municipality of Castellaneta, various Civil Protection Volunteer Associations and some beach establishments.
During the emergency, a fire in a marine pine forest was simulated, with rescue operations carried out by sea and aimed at ensuring the safety of swimmers and users of accommodation facilities surrounded by flames.
The main objective of the exercise was to test the communication flow between the different components of the system and the operational procedures for the evacuation of swimmers by sea, in preparation for the management of a possible emergency connected to the spread of a large fire. The participation of the Civil Protection volunteers was significant: 60 volunteers took part in the exercise, demonstrating once again their sensitivity and willingness to make their contribution to serving the community. The exercise confirmed the effectiveness of the collaboration between all the entities involved and strengthened the response capabilities to possible emergencies.
The head of the Civil Protection Section of Puglia, engineer Barbara Valenzano, is satisfied. “The exercise confirmed the value of the professionalism put in place by our organization – said the engineer. Valenzano – who have proven ready to intervene to guarantee the safety of our communities and our territory.”
“Our region is immersed in the sea, from which an important path to salvation can come – commented Admiral Vincenzo Leone, Regional Commander of Puglia and Basilicata of the Coast Guard – Generally we think of the opposite, that is, that we must reach from the sea save by reaching the ground. And instead the sea, which is always welcoming, becomes an important way of salvation. You just have to respect it.”
