The Rome prosecutor’s office requested three sentences of 18 years in prison in the abbreviated proceeding relating to the death of Francesco Vitale, known as ‘Ciccio Barbuto’, the 44-year-old PR man from Bari who fell from a building in via Pescaglia, in the Magliana area, on 22 February 2023.
The Defendants:
The defendants are DF, known as ‘Saccottino’, SP, known as ‘Sergione’, and Ilaria.V. The three were arrested last year by the Carabinieri of the investigative unit of the provincial command of Rome. The investigation was coordinated by prosecutors Francesco Cascini and Francesco Minisci, with charges of kidnapping for the purpose of extortion, aggravated by the death of the victim.
The Reconstruction of the Facts:
According to the prosecution, Vitale was kidnapped and tortured inside an apartment to extort the sum of 500,000 euros from his family as a ransom for his release. Desperate to escape his captors, Vitale fell from the fifth floor of the building.
The Involvement of the Defendants:
Ciccio Barbuto would have been lured to Rome by ‘Sergione’. Once in the apartment on Via della Pescaglia, Vitale was allegedly beaten while waiting for the ransom to be paid.
Despite attempts to clean the traces with bleachthe police officers identified blood and other footprints which confirmed Vitale’s presence on the fifth floor of stairway D.
Before dying, Vitale attempted to escape and made one last phone call to his partner, but the attempt ended tragically with his fall and death.
