Finally summer in the shopping bag

It’s finally summer This week’s shopping bagthe service for Italian consumers created by Bmti and Italmercati Business Networkin collaboration with Non-Profit Consumerism.

As regards fruit, in fact, the production campaigns of the main summer fruits have now begun. Among the most recommended of the week are the watermelons, which had a positive start to the campaign, initially with Sicilian production and, subsequently, with products from other production regions. The quality is good and prices are falling thanks to the increase in quantities available on the market. Furthermore, the climate, which is not yet excessively hot, has kept the level of demand low, also keeping prices low, around 0.60 euros/kilo.

Peaches and nectarines

They are also present in the markets, with advantageous prices nectarines which, compared to peaches, have even lower prices. This trend is mainly due to a lower production of the latter. Prices vary from 1.30 euro/kg for the small size to 2.50 euro/kg for the large size. Also recommended peaches which, although showing prices 0.20 euro/kg higher than nectarineshowever, have regular prices compared to the average for the period.

This year, unlike the previous year, the cherry production is regular, although the bad weather of recent weeks has slowed down production without, however, altering its quality. Currently, wholesale prices range from 5 to 6 euros/kg, depending on the size.

Vegetables

As for vegetables, the productions of this period are particularly convenient, both from southern Italy and from the rest of the country. Prices vary depending on the product, with aubergines at 0.80 euros/kg, hand-picked green beans starting from 3 euros up to 6 euros depending on the size, courgettes at 1.20 euros/kg.

Furthermore, tomato prices fell by 30% compared to last year due to a substantial increase in production. In fact, the Sicilian product has been joined by that of other production areas, such as that of Lazio. The increase in supply, however, is not covered by demand which remains low resulting in prices for cherry tomatoes ranging from 1.50 to 1.80 and for datterini tomatoes around 2.30 euros/kg. Smooth round green tomatoes are also down at around 1.30-1.50 euros/kilo.
