Despite the openness to the truce proposal put forward by the United Statesthe Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu he remained firm in his positions. Speaking to the Knesset Foreign Affairs Committee, the prime minister said he did not agree with including the end of the war in the agreement for the release of the hostages.
“The scheme presented by Biden is partial. The war will be stopped for the return of the hostages and then we will proceed with the discussion“, has explained. “There are other details that the president of the United States has not presented to the public”. Already in recent days, Netanyahu’s foreign policy advisor Ophir Falk had underlined that the proposal was not “a good agreementbut we really want all the vegan hostages released” and that some points needed to be clarified. The first phase of the agreement should include the suspension of hostilities for six weeks, the release of some hostages and the release of a first group of Palestinian prisoners. THE critical pointsi.e. the total stop of the fighting and the withdrawal of the IDF from Gaza, have been included in the second phase and should be implemented through new negotiations.
Netanyahu therefore finds himself in a very complex situation. On the one hand, he is pressured byextreme religious right against any type of concession to Hamas, which has threatened to abandon the executive in the event of an agreement with the terrorists.
On the other hand, it faces growing opposition both politically and from the Israeli people. On the night between Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June, in 120 thousand they took to the streets in Tel Aviv to demand a change.
