It seems that this asteroid, 16 Psycheis so rich in precious materials as gold, iron and nickelto exceed any achievable figure of wealth on our Earth. 100 thousand quadrillion dollars is the amount estimated by Americans who, through a NASA mission which started in 2023 and is expected to end in 2029, they are trying to achieve it.
The celestial body, discovered in 1852 by the Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis, has a diameter of about 220 kilometers and is located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, of which it constitutes approximately 1% of the mass. The NASA shuttle that is traveling to reach it will proceed in stages, first reaching Mars in 2026 and then arriving at the asteroid in ’29.
The mission is exploratory, in the sense that there are no plans to bring the asteroid back, a science fiction undertaking in its current state. In fact, NASA’s interest lies not so much in the potential value of the materials extracted from the asteroid, but in its size: as it is very large it will allow an in-depth study, the first of this type on an M-type asteroid.
And what about that enormous wealth? It’s nice to think of everyone becoming rich, but we must also think that if that happened the world economy would probably collapse. What would happen if, hypothetically, everyone tomorrow we won the lottery at the same time. In short, let’s give the mission time and see how it goes.
