The ceasefire proposal put forward by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, to stop the bloodshed in Gaza is positive but not decisive, because it does not address the roots of the conflict. Furthermore, it is only a temporary solution if we consider the obstacles that prevent us from reaching a more structured peace process, primarily the open opposition of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Biden is trying to demonstrate to internal and external public opinion that the US still has the ability to “govern” a crisis with the weapons of diplomacy and political authority. Stability in the Palestinian enclave is also necessary and essential for regional security, as conflicts in this area can involve powers such as Iran, Egypt and Turkey.
Aipac, the influential Jewish lobby in America, has expressed its support for the proposed solution. “President Biden forcefully embraced Israel’s offer and made clear that it is up to Hamas to accept the framework agreement that would return all hostages and end the war,” it said in a statement. The note urges “all members of Congress to strongly support the Israeli government’s latest effort.” “The United States, the statement continues, should insist that the international community unequivocally increase pressure on Hamas to accept the terms.”
There is no shortage of knots. A senior US official said the deal outlined by Biden was almost identical to the terms requested by Hamas, which it had previously rejected.
Tel Aviv does not back down. “Israel’s conditions for ending the war have not changed: the destruction of Hamas’ military and governance capabilities, the release of all hostages and the guarantee that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel,” he wrote in Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. The Jewish state, Bibi added, “will continue to insist that these conditions be met before a permanent ceasefire is put in place. The idea that Israel will accept a permanent ceasefire before these conditions are met is not contemplated.”
