THE FAVOR DRESS There are little mysteries that last for years. Many years. Until someone thinks to investigate. Take the wedding of Charles and Diana, which took place on 29 July 1981. It was a day of great celebration, and not just in Great Britain. The whole world, 750 million people, remained with their noses glued to the TV to see what then seemed like a dream wedding between the heir to the throne and the young Diana Spencer. SHE LOWERS HER EYES To this day, no one has ever known what Charles said to Diana at that moment. This was revealed 43 years later by a lip translation expert hired by the Daily Mail. And reading them today, those sentences are almost endearing. «You are perfect», Carlo says to Diana in front of thousands of cheering subjects, «give me your hand. And also a kiss.” Diana, excited, touches her husband’s lips with hers and lowers her eyes, excited. Until, the lip-reading expert reveals, Queen Elizabeth approaches the bride and, with her usual pragmatism, brings her back to her order: «Look at the crowd, dear. They’ve been waiting for you for hours.” And Carlo intervenes, briskly, almost in Diana’s defense: «she’s dragging on. Let’s go to eat”.

CARLO’S DOUBTS Difficult to judge from a few words spoken in front of thousands of people and with the whole clan around, of course. But Carlo’s sentences translated from his lips, note the Daily Mail, almost seem to deny the statements of Penny Thornton, Princess D’s royal astrologer who told how Diana was “devastated” after the Prince of Wales, the evening before the wedding, told her that he didn’t love her. Carlo, revealed the royal watcher Robert Jobson, in a book that caused a sensation in 2018, questioned his decision to marry Diana so deeply that he considered calling off the wedding altogether. According to Jobson, the then Prince of Wales – who had long been in love with Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Consort – felt that his relationship with the very young Lady Spencer was “destined to incompatibility”, but he also feared that putting an end to his engagement would be ” catastrophic”. We know well how it ended. But those whispered words also seem to say something else. That Carlo perhaps, as best he could, tried.
