TREBISACCE The “Virgo Fidelis” grove, the only green lung existing in the urban perimeter, was in smoke. Italia-Nostra-Calabria expressed alarm and concern which, monitoring as always over the entire Calabrian territory, sees the residual forestry heritage going up in smoke and becoming increasingly impoverished after the many fires which, with a largely malicious origin, have devastated and devastated the regional territory and, in particular, the Upper Ionian Cosentino. As is known, on Saturday 25 May the pine forest in which the historic “Virgo Fidelis” Institute has always been immersed literally went up in flames and a large part of the green area covered with pine trees and lush Mediterranean scrub was attacked by fire and, consequently , was incinerated and brutalized. This time however, as the wooded area was close to the town center and therefore in close contact with the homes, as well as incinerating and destroying a large portion of natural heritage, the fire threatened the adjacent homes, sowing desolation and panic among the people. Also because, from what has been known, the Fire Brigade, although alerted by numerous calls, as the Trebisacce Volunteer Fire Brigade Detachment was not manned due to the usual issue of insufficient staffing, arrived on site within the times compatible with the kilometric distances that separate the Upper Ionian from Castrovillari and Corigliano-Rossano. “The hill covered in greenery, the only green lung of the city on which the “Virgo Fidelis” stands, a point of reference for entire generations – wrote the Arch. Angelo Malatacca Regional President of Italia Nostra – went up in smoke in the grip of very high flames, visible from a considerable distance, which enveloped and burned most of the Pinus Pinea trees”. According to the regional president of Malatacca from Trebisacce, this is yet another arson attack which must therefore be strongly condemned, both for the panic that the flames have spread among the local population and for having destroyed that splendid corner of greenery. “Yet another criminal act – concluded the Arch. Angelo Malatacca – demonstrates once again that, unfortunately, the city is experiencing an escalation of crime and insecurity which has repercussions on the serenity of citizens and projects outside the image of a city adrift, in which criminal phenomena make it as master, discouraging entrepreneurs to invest and canceling every form of commercial and tourist attraction”.
