Codacons: inflation slows but holiday prices rise

The slowdown in inflation, which also remained stable at 0.8% in May, is a positive sign for the pockets of Italians, but Istat data highlights that prices in the holiday sector will be high, rising significantly compared to the last year. Codacons states this, commenting on the statistics institute’s numbers.

From transport to accommodation, passing through museums, tolls, parking, all the items that affect travel and tourism are recording a strong growth trend, an extremely worrying figure in view of the upcoming summer departures – analyzes Codacons – Trains have become more expensive by +8.1% compared to last year, buses and coaches +4%, diesel costs 4.9% more, petrol +3.8%, to which is added an average increase of +2.7% for parking and +1.9% for tolls. Holiday packages represent the item with the heaviest increases, even +20.4% compared to the same period in 2023.

Sleeping outside is also more expensive: the prices of hotels, motels and guesthouses have increased by +7.8% on an annual basis, +8.1% for other accommodation facilities (holiday homes, B&Bs, etc.). Museums and historical monuments show a +2.5%, while people spend 3.6% more to eat in restaurants.

Airline tickets are going against the trend, with domestic flight rates falling by -11.2%, international flights -16.4%, European flights -10.6%, but this is a physiological decline after the strong increases recorded in March due to Easter – warns the association – For the month of August flight prices for the main holiday resorts monitored by Codacons show significant increases compared to last summer.
