Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d’Or goes to “Anora” by Sean Baker Italpress news agency

CANNES (FRANCE) (ITALPRESS) – “Anora” was one of the favourites, and in the end the comedy by American Sean Beker won the Palme d’Or awarded by the Jury chaired by Greta Gerwig. An outcome for the Cannes 77 Competition that reassures especially those who were hoping for a Palmares that would take into account the variety of expressive forms and genres that characterized this edition. “Anora” is the portrait of a girl from Brooklyn who does striptease and gets into trouble by marrying the very young and spoiled scion of a Russian oligarch on vacation in America. With a daring comedy pace, likeable and successful characters, perhaps a little too long, the film confirms a directorial talent that has been offering quality works for years.
The Special Prize awarded to “The Seed of the Wild Fig” by the Iranian Mohammad Rasoulof highlights a politically important work and supports the cause of Iranian artists and people. Rasoulof was able to collect the award on the Croisette because he fled Iran a few days ago, where the authorities were holding him.
The Grand Prize for the film by Indian director Payal Kapadia “All We Imagine As Light” highlights one of the most beautiful and surprising works of the Competition, a portrait of three women from Mumbai suspended over their difficult existences.
Two awards were given to Emilia Perèz by Jacques Audiard, another film much loved by the Croisette audience: the Jury Prize and the choral prize for the female performances of the cast, composed of Adriana Paz, Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofìa Gascòn and Selena Gomez. The Award for Male Performance went to Jesse Plemons for Kind of Kindnes, the episodic film by Yorgos Lanthimos. Great satisfaction for the Director’s Award awarded to the Portuguese Miguel Gomes for “Grand Tour”, a stylistically innovative colonial melodrama. The Screenplay Award to Coralie Fargeat for “The Substance” finally signals another of the great protagonists of Cannes 77.
