the new Ets is launched – QuiFinanza

The price crisis petrol and diesel (as well as LPG and methane) is well known and citizens deal with it every day. Refueling with petrol at 1.8 euros per liter and diesel at 1.7, regardless of the various fluctuations, is now the norm.

The government is currently unable to intervene, even if the 2 euro threshold is exceeded again, which is decidedly easy to reach on motorway sections. The worst, however, is yet to come, since a price increase of petrol and diesel 40 cents.

What is ETS

The new situation is complicating the situation, which in itself is not rosy Ets – Emission Trading Scheme. It is a European Union tool to combat climate change. Specifically, we aim to considerably reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are obviously targeting those sectors which are known to have a high carbon footprint: producers of energy from fossil fuels, heavy industries and the civil aviation sector (among those already affected in the EU).

But we are talking about new Ets in relation to how much launched in 2023. Companies in the transport sector are also included in the group, as well as buildings. The result is a new one tax effective from 2027, which will certainly have a direct impact on citizens’ pockets. It is easy to foresee a considerable increase in the cost of petrol and diesel.

Supplies: price increase

Various analysts spoke about concrete, but obviously unofficial (as they could three years in advance) figures. They have effectively sounded the alarm, predicting an increase in the cost of petrol and diesel within the borders of the European Union. A prospect that they define as certain, due to the new Ets.

The agency Ageei she expressed herself as follows: “Starting from 2027, UNE will begin to quantify CO2 emissions from buildings and road transport. All with a new carbon pricing system, the Emissions Trading System 2. A new system that could lead to higher price increases than expected.”

In 2023, when the new tax, because this is what we are actually talking about, was established, we were certain to see prices below 45 euros per ton of CO2. This would have resulted in a increase of 10 cents about for petrol and of 12 cents approximately for diesel, starting from 2027.

A prospect that today appears unrealistic. The German MEP Tiemo Wölken underlined how new studies suggest an increase in price up to 200 euros per ton. It’s easy to see how this could translate into a four-fold increase in the price at the petrol station. An increase in prices of up to forty cents per liter for citizens. In a condition as delicate as the current one, this further taxation could lead to serious consequences. Environmentalists certainly hope it could lead to a revolution in transport habits in the EU, but this would presuppose a transformation of urban centres, making them cycle-friendly and with better public transport systems.

Is the EU standing by and watching? Not exactly. Alongside the new ETS, a considerable economic burden is expected. A social fund equal to 87 billion euros which, although this is a huge amount, may not be enough if the worst case scenario were to occur.
