High school nursing students for a day

Giving an intramuscular injection, performing an electrocardiogram, taking blood or treating a wound are just some of the experiences lived in the field by around twenty high school students in the Ravenna and Forlì area, who participated in ‘Nurses for a day’, initiative organized by the three-year degree course in Nursing of Faenza, Ravenna Campus of the University of Bologna. The initiative was desired by the coordinator of the Manfredo course, Professor Katia Mattarozzi of Dimec, the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, as a moment of orientation for this year’s graduating students.

The issue of the shortage of healthcare, medical and nursing personnel, both in the public and private sectors, has become very topical since post-covid. Just a few days ago, a study by the WHO, the World Health Organization, highlighted in one of its reports how much in our country there is, for a series of reasons, a strong shortage of nurses with a consequent search for all-round staff. ‘abroad. In Faenza, the Medicine and Surgery University of Bologna, Ravenna Campus, has been running the Nursing Course for several years, a reality from which 164 students leave every year as ‘training potential’ who, often, just a few months after completion of their studies, all of them, according to what has been ascertained by statistics, find employment, particularly in the private sector and, based on availability, also in public health authorities.

Precisely to bring together and raise awareness of the reality of Faenza, the Course, which is based in the premises of Faventia Sales, organized a moment with high school students not only from Faenza but also from Lugo, Ravenna and Forlì. So around twenty kids, wearing lab coats, gloves, masks and shoes, followed by the students and teachers themselves, tested themselves on the two cutting-edge mannequins. Guglielmo and Anna, these are the names given by the students themselves to the mannequins, gave themselves to the students by receiving injections, undergoing an electrocardiogram and so on. “An experience – explains Katia Mattarozzi – defined by the students as exciting; an educational and stimulating event which offered the possibility of evaluating whether the nursing profession could be part of their future path. The experiences lived by the participants favored greater clarity on the professional perspectives, allowing them to appreciate the importance and value of nurses’ work in the current healthcare context”. The students of the Torricelli high school participated in the initiative, which is only the first part of a series of meetings that the Faenza Nursing Degree course plans to make a permanent event for local high schools from February next year. -Ballardini Faenza, of the Persolino-Strocchi Faenza institute, of the Olivetti Callegari professional institute of Ravenna, of the Stoppa technical, professional and commercial center of Lugo and of the Saffi Alberti technical institute of Forlì.
