Irishman Conor Murphy won the fourth edition of Eroica Juniores

MONTALCINO. The Irish Conor Murphy (Academy U19 Region South) won today in Montalcino (SI) the fourth edition of Eroica Juniores – Andrea Meneghelli Cup with 137 runners from 27 teams at the start. The race, from Siena to Montalcino in 111 kilometers with four stretches of dirt road, saw a trio of runners as protagonists; Conor Murphy himself, Ivan Toselli (Vangi Il Pirata) and Tommaso Brosio (Ciclistica Trevigliese); escape born precisely on the initiative of the latter. The final selection took place along the final climb, just three kilometers from the finish.

Immediately after the first stretch of road, just 27 kilometers from the start, four of them broke away: Bor Berlak (Slovenia), Andrea Rinaldi (Romanese), Joann Rolando (Team Franco Ballerini) and Federico Nardelli (Montecorona). The group was then resumed along the second stretch of dirt road, when the odometer showed 70 kilometers from the road. It was then Tommaso Bosio (Ciclistica Trevigliese) who took off and broke away. The quickest to catch the breakaway was Ivan Toselli (Vangi Il Pirata), followed by the Irishman Conor Murphy (Academy U19 Region Sud). The trio of Brosio, Toselli and Murphy was thus formed in the lead of the race with the group pulled by Work Service Coratti.
At the beginning of the last stretch of dirt road, Argiano, the advantage of the three in command was more than a minute. At the exit of the dirt road, just over 10 kilometers from the finish line, the fight for success began between Tommaso Bosio (Ciclistica Trevigliese), Ivan Toselli (Vangi Il Pirata) and the Irishman Conor Murphy (Academy U19 Region Sud ).

On the final climb, five kilometers to the finish line in Montalcino, Bosio launched his attack. Toselli couldn’t keep up the pace while Murphy managed to stay within reach of the attacker. Three kilometers from the finish line it was the Irishman who took his turn and left Bosio behind.
“I used my head over my legs” explained the Irish winner after the finish line. Then a big smile like this: “It’s the first time I’ve come to Italy and I liked it very much”. Obviously.
Tommaso Bosio: “I had good feelings and I tried from afar. I knew I was fine. Maybe I tried to sprint too early at the end.” Ivan Toselli was also very disappointed with the result: “I tried to break away from my rivals along the last dirt road but then on the final climb I lost my legs.”
“This race has a great name and the kids feel the responsibility of running in an extraordinary context” underlined Giancarlo Brocci, creator of L’Eroica while Gilberto Simoni, who participated in the first edition of Montepaschi Eroica, starting from Gaiole in Chianti: “ I congratulate the boys who participate because this is a very demanding race”
