STOP The aim is to open new sports facilities. The latest initiative at the former Azzurra camp in Santa Caterina which is coming back to life. With the ribbon cutting of weekend it is now a large park, also named in memory of Luigi Gazzoli, the historic manager of the local neighborhood team who had done so much for sport in the 70s, who had died prematurely and for whom a plaque was discovered. The area has been a point of reference for many sportsmen for years, an important center of aggregation. Then she remained unused for a long time.
Plan
The Municipality wanted to redevelop it and recover it as a green lung for the city, creating a 7-a-side football pitch, a beach volleyball pitch (which before the inauguration saw the Catholic Action boys compete in a triangular match), a play area for children with slide, swing, spring games, fitness area and dog area. The first part of the recovery of the area, the one dedicated to greenery, games and sports, saw the works, for a total investment of 300 thousand euros, carried out in two parts and also saw the planting of the turf; the irrigation system for flowerbeds and tree species was installed, as well as street furniture with games and benches. The next step, for the total recovery of the area, will be the construction of the new Santa Caterina social center. As the mayor Paolo Calcinaro recalled during the inauguration «this is an area whose redevelopment was long awaited. We have given substance to an important recovery idea, this area from an unused space becomes a place of leisure and aggregation, for the neighborhood and for the city. A project with which a historic space of the city is returned to the city. I thank the council, the councillors, the Curia, the Archbishop, the parish, the Spazio Insieme association, the municipal councilor Roberto Simoni, all those who worked”.
First citizen who also wanted to remember the figure of Candido Pierleoni, who passed away prematurely, who had tried to safeguard this area, even in the moment of abandonment and degradation, even with a minimum of interventions which he carried out voluntarily. The works brought to life what was foreseen in the project curated by the architect Paolo Santarelli, with the coordination of the municipal technical office, and Marco Iuvalè of the municipality as responsible for the procedure. Management of the works entrusted to Roberta Fabiani. With a notarial deed, in 2021 the Municipality had acquired, free of charge, from the parish the surface right of the former sports field, which had previously passed with the approval of the deed in the Council in July 2020.
«A place of socialization that means being together and that overcomes every form of violence, an example of how public and private can collaborate in a synergistic way and give results», underlines Archbishop Rocco Pennacchio in the blessing». Daniele Rocchi, president of Spazio Insieme, was also satisfied. Simone, Gazzoli’s son, was also present and thanked him for his commitment. Alongside these works, two gyms and a multifunctional center are also under scrutiny to enrich the offer on the coast. These are sports facilities available to associations and neighborhoods.
The Riviera
In Marina Palmense the interventions concern the construction of the new gym. For the construction of this facility, funding of one million and 700 thousand euros was granted to the Municipality by the Department of Sport of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. A facility where you can practice various sports, from five-a-side football to volleyball to basketball, with 90 seats. In Lido San Tommaso the other gym on the east side of the equipped fitness area, already built, in front of the seafront. There is also a sports climbing wall nearby. Here martial arts, with multipurpose and multifunctional spaces, which can also be used to practice other activities such as gentle gymnastics for the elderly. A complex that stands in front of the seafront. Sport but also social and aggregative functions, finally, for the new multifunctional center that is being built in Casabianca, in the area between the tennis courts of the Lido Tennis Club and the pine forest.
